How to Get Into UK Rally Driving: Our Top Tips

Rallying is one of the most exciting and challenging forms of motorsport, combining speed, skill and endurance across a variety of terrains. If you’ve ever heard the cars driving through the British countryside in picturesque places such as Wales and the Lake District or caught a video on the Motorsport UK YouTube channel and thought, “I want to do that!” – good news, it’s possible! Here’s our top tips as to how to get started rallying in the UK.

1. Understand the Basics of Rallying

Before diving in, it’s important to understand what rallying entails. Unlike traditional circuit racing, rallying takes place on closed public roads, gravel tracks, and forests. Competitors race against the clock rather than each other directly on the track, with a co-driver navigating the course. Research the different types of rally motorsport that are available to compete in, and choose the one that suits you best.

2. Get a Motorsport UK Licencemotorsport uk logo

To compete in any official rally event in the UK, you need a competition licence issued by Motorsport UK, the governing body for motorsport. Head over to the Motorsport UK website and visit their ‘Get Started’ page.

Once you’ve obtained your Go Rallying Pack, which includes information and a licence application, you’ll also need to complete for a licence type, either a RS Clubman for club-level events or an Interclub (National B) Licence, which is for higher-level competitions.

3. Join a Local Motor ClubRedditch and District Car Club Logo

Rallying is a community-driven sport, and joining a local motor club is essential. Clubs such as the BTRDA 750 Motor Club, or regional associations such as Rallynuts’ local Redditch and District Car Club (RDCC) as supported by our own rally driver, Paul Bonas.

Many newcomers start by volunteering as marshals at events, giving them valuable insight into how rallies operate and helping to keep the sport safe. Remember, without the help of volunteers, a motorsport rally can't go ahead!

4. Gain Experience Through Navigatingglen mercer co-driver of the Rallynuts rally team

One of the best ways to enter rallying without the initial expense of owning a car is by becoming a co-driver. Many experienced drivers are on the lookout for navigators, and it’s an excellent way to learn how rally events work from the inside.

Becoming a co-driver takes time; studying pace notes, timing systems, and road books to gain confidence in the role will help considerably. Check out our Co-Driver Accessories section for a complete range of recommendations to get started.

5. Understand Equipment and Safety Requirements

To compete in rallying, you need proper safety equipment. This includes a fireproof race suit, racing gloves, boots, and helmet that comply with FIA standards. A helmet with an intercom system is crucial for communication with your co-driver.

As with all motorsports, fire safety is a key concern, and you must have an in-date fire extinguisher system installed in the car, along with knowledge of fire safety procedures.

Here at Rallynuts, we stock a variety of fire safety equipment, from basic switches to advanced automatic fire extinguisher systems. We’re also an exclusive Lifeline Services and Refills Authorised Service Agent, a service we are proud to offer to the rally motorsport community.
